Shogi in the World, in Europe and in Italy
Shogi is a game that can be included in the category of mind sports. Just like all other sports, it has a hierarchy of organizations and a network of recognitions. This system serves to acknowledge the officiality, seriousness, and authenticity of the participating organizations.
The Nihon Shogi Renmei (NSR) is the undisputed top of the hierarchy worldwide, while in Europe, the highest authority is the Federation of European Shogi Associations (FESA).
The Nihon Shogi Renmei (NSR – 日本将棋連盟 – www.shogi.or.jp) is the official Japanese federation that manages the professional Shogi world in Japan. Given the authority of the organization, it is effectively the global reference point for Shogi.
The NSR’s goals go far beyond promoting Shogi and organizing tournaments. The Nihon Shogi Renmei is also involved in training young players aspiring to pursue a professional Shogi career. In Japan, playing Shogi is a regulated profession with restricted access.
The NSR has recognized the Associazione Italiana di Shogi (AIS) since its founding year in 1999. The AIS is the only Italian organization accepted as the national representative for Italy. As proof of this, the Italian player who participates every three years in the International Shogi Forum (ISF) is officially selected through the Italian Shogi Championship, played in person and widely publicized by the AIS.
The Federation of European Shogi Associations (FESA – https://fesashogi.eu/) is the federation of national Shogi associations in Europe. Founded on August 26, 1985, it promotes and supports the spread of Shogi in Europe. The FESA organizes the annual European Shogi Championship (ESC) and manages the Elo rating for European players.
The FESA has recognized the Associazione Italiana di Shogi (AIS) since its founding year in 1999. Therefore, the AIS is the only Italian organization accepted as the national interlocutor for Italy.
The Associazione Italiana Shogi (AIS – link) was established in 1999 in Milan. It has been organizing the annual Italian Shogi Championship (CIS) in person since its inception. In the same year, the AIS was recognized by the Nihon Shogi Renmei (NSR) and the Federation of European Shogi Associations (FESA).
Over the years, other tournaments and in-person activities have complemented the Italian Shogi Championship, demonstrating the authenticity and seriousness of the organization. Events are also organized by the AIS Shogi Circle in Milan and the AIS Shogi Dojo in Perugia.
Shogi is also played by AIS members and friends on online gaming platforms such as 81Dojo and LiShogi. In recent years, the rise of online gaming has made it possible to schedule regular remote tournaments, such as “A March of Lions” and “An Autumn of Lions.” However, the AIS remains strongly convinced of the need to organize activities and the Italian Championship in person to ensure the authenticity of results and to strengthen the sense of community. AIS members and Shogi enthusiasts stay in touch through social media channels on Facebook and Telegram.
The AIS is always active in promoting Shogi in Italy and consolidating international contacts.
The AIS has recently published an official statement at the following link.
